This resource explicitly teaches inference making, paragraph structure and three language techniques: alliteration, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole. This lesson is ideal for guiding low-level or new students through the foundational stages of language analysis and inference making.

*This resource can be used independently or as part of my lesson sequence: Lesson 1 (Inference): Introduces students to basic decoding and teaches them how to climb from literal meanings to nterpretations using the ‘Inference Ladder’. Lesson 2 (Language Techniques 1): Connects inference making to figurative tools, including metaphors, similes, personification, and juxtaposition.

Lesson Content & Structure

  • Retrieval & Recap: A quick retrieval quiz to consolidate understanding of metaphors, similes, personification, and juxtaposition from prior learning.

  • Explicitly teaches three language techniques: Direct definitions, examples, and reader-effect guidance for Alliteration, Onomatopoeia, and Hyperbole.*

  • Includes sentence starters on how to analyse sound-based techniques without falling into common pitfalls of analysis such as saying the text is ‘immersive’ or ‘relatable’.* Explicit guidance on using ‘sounds like / mirrors / echoes’ for sound-based techniques.

  • The ‘Point First’ Framework: An essential writing upgrade that shifts students away from jumping straight into a quote. It explicitly teaches a three-sentence paragraph model: Sentence 1: Clear Point, Sentence 2: Evidence + Technique, and Sentence 3: Developed Inference.

  • Scaffolded Application (Dunkirk Theme): Uses high-quality, engaging fiction extracts themed around the setting of Dunkirk. Features a modelled ‘I Do’ teacher response, a collaborative ‘We Do’ text marking activity, and a fully independent ‘You Do’ exam practice response. Uses videos as optional visual scaffolds - Dunkirk trailer and boat rescue film clip.

  • Plenary: A diagnostic exit ticket to check student retention of the new techniques and structural rules before they leave.

What is Included?

Instructional Presentation Slides: A clean, logically sequenced slide deck (Language Analysis - Lesson 3) containing all text extracts, explicit model answers, writing frames, and instructional graphics.

Inference / Language Analysis Development Lessons

Three fully-resourced, ready-to-teach PowerPoint lessons that build students' inference skills from the ground up and bridge them into AQA English Language Paper 1, Question 2. Designed with heavy scaffolding, explicit teaching, and a clear I-do / we-do / you-do structure throughout — ideal for mixed-ability and lower-attaining or intervention groups, but easily stretched for higher attainers. The bundle takes students on a deliberate learning journey: from understanding what an inference is, to generating deeper inferences independently, to explaining how a writer's language creates meaning — exactly what Question 2 rewards. **What's included — three complete lessons:** * **Lesson 1 — Inference: Reading Between the Lines** Introduces explicit vs implicit meaning and the "Inference Ladder" — a visual tool that takes students from basic, literal readings up to expert, analytical ones. Clear definitions, retrieval practice, worked modelling, and scaffolded writing frames. Shows students exactly where inference is assessed across Papers 1 and 2. * **Lesson 2 — Inference in Action (John Fante & Charles Dickens)** Applies inference to two contrasting real texts — a fiction extract from 1933 Was a Bad Year (John Fante) and non-fiction from Charles Dickens: A Life (Claire Tomalin). Uses a consistent colour-coded system (task / help / model) and a "clue → inference → effect" chain, then bridges explicitly into Paper 1 Question 2, including a mind-map of inference-generating strategies (zooming, foreshadowing, emotion, atmosphere and more). * **Lesson 3 — Analysing Language in Fiction (Dunkirk)** Recaps prior learning, then teaches students to spot language techniques and explain their effect on the reader, using an engaging Dunkirk evacuation/rescue context (particularly effective for military or history-linked cohorts). Includes technique teaching, a full I-do / we-do / you-do sequence, and a "build your answer" frame that trains the strong Point → Evidence + Technique → Effect paragraph structure. **Key features across the bundle:** * Explicit teaching slides with student-friendly definitions * Consistent I-do / we-do / you-do gradual release * Built-in scaffolding, sentence starters and writing frames * Retrieval and recap activities to embed prior learning * Stretch/challenge tasks for higher attainers * Exit tickets for assessment for learning * Clean, professional, dyslexia-friendly design with large, readable text * Fully editable PowerPoint files Print-friendly and classroom-ready — no prep required.
