Lesson 16

This lesson introduces learners to the astronomical cycles used to measure time. Through teacher explanation, questioning, physical modelling and short calculations, learners compare solar and sidereal time, distinguish lunar periods, explain the cause of the seasons, and apply longitude to time-zone problems. Emphasise the recurring idea that observed cycles depend on the reference point being used. Use the globe-and-lamp demonstrations to address misconceptions, particularly that the seasons are caused by Earth’s distance from the Sun.
