This 100 ENGLISH LITERARY TERMS SORTING GAME or HUNT for Secondary English Classrooms is an easy way to help students learn about language techniques and writing techniques.

Print these and cut them along the dotted lines to divide the term, definition and examples. You can mix them up in a bag and have students sort them into correct sets, or you can set up a hunt around the room and make teams find the definition and example of their team’s terms. Some ideas for use are included in the document.

While they play, you’ll be helping your students learn English terminology and vocabulary which will help them develop their vocabulary and confidence with literary terms.

Use the color / colour version to help scaffold students who need a little more help and differentiation! Use them all or use the ones you want!

All the terminology you need is here:

Analogy, Ambiguity, Alliteration, Allusion, Bias, Colloquialism, Contrast, Conflict, Cliché, Euphemism, Hyperbole, Irony, Jargon, Metaphor, Onomatopoeia, Oxymoron, Paradox, Pun, Satire, Slang, Symbolism, Connotation, Homonym, Register, Mood, Suspense, Theme, Plot …
