1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach

Dear Colleague,

Imagine walking through the dark, crowded streets of Whitechapel in 1888 — the air thick with smoke, the alleys alive with noise, and every corner telling a story of survival. This lesson invites students to step into that world and uncover what daily life was truly like for those who lived in the heart of Victorian London. It examines the living conditions, housing, and daily struggles of the people in East London during this period.

It is the third part of a 5-lesson set exploring life in Whitechapel between 1888 and 1891. Students will engage with original sources and factual evidence to understand how poverty, overcrowding, and social inequality shaped life in Victorian Whitechapel — while developing the analytical and writing skills required for GCSE success.

All lessons in this series follow a consistent model to help students learn coherently and always understand where they are in their learning.

Objectives:
To categorize information on the living conditions in Whitechapel 1880-1891.
To evaluate the consequences of the living conditions in Whitechapel 1888-1891.
