Help students explore the human impact of World War II through the moving oral history of Belle Johansson, a Camden resident who lived through The Blitz and experienced the devastating loss of six family members during the bombing of London.

This engaging two-page research resource, accompanied by archive photographs, offers an authentic first-hand account of wartime Britain, resilience, family separation and hope. It is ideal for developing historical understanding while supporting creative and analytical learning across the curriculum.

Students will explore:

The Blitz and life in wartime London (1939–1945).
The impact of war on families and communities.
Loss, resilience and recovery after World War II.
The stigma surrounding tuberculosis (TB) after the war.
Migration and leaving loved ones to build a new life overseas.
Family heritage, identity and belonging.
Equality, empathy and respecting differences.

Belle reflects on the hardships her family endured after the war and shares a powerful message of tolerance:

“People will walk by each other, and they will not notice their differences.”

She also tells the inspiring story of her great-niece, whose ambition to become a Doctor of Science led her to emigrate to Australia despite the emotional pain of leaving her close-knit family behind. Belle recalls:

“It was a great wrench when she went, for her and us.”

The story concludes with a joyful family reunion in Australia, highlighting themes of perseverance, opportunity and enduring family connections.
