This engaging whole-class reading session develops children’s understanding of how to look after our planet, while strengthening their fluency and comprehension when reading non-fiction texts.
The resource includes an original, illustrated two-page reading text and an accompanying 12-slide PowerPoint, providing a varied sequence of activities.
The text explores why our planet is a shared home for people, plants and animals. Children learn how litter can harm wildlife, how reusing and recycling can reduce waste, and why saving water and energy matters. They also discover how flowers and habitats support living things, and consider how individuals, communities and organisations can work together to care for the environment.
A vocabulary check clarifies unfamiliar language, followed by activities developing retrieval, explanation, inference, comparison, evaluation, sequencing and summarising skills. Quick-check questions, solo thinking, partner discussions and deeper-thinking challenges encourage children to use clues from the text and explain their answers.
Suggested answers, support prompts and teacher guidance are provided in the slide notes. Both the Word reading text and PowerPoint presentation are fully editable.
Best suited to Year 2, the session can also be adapted for other KS1 learners. Ideal for linking purposeful reading comprehension with a geography unit exploring our wonderful world.
