Absent from Thee – John Wilmot (AQA KS5)

This KS5 lesson is designed for AQA A Level English Literature and focuses on Absent from Thee by John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester. The lesson develops students’ understanding of the poem while building confidence with language, form, and contextual interpretation.

Students begin with a short summary of the poem alongside key AO3 contextual information on Rochester and Restoration attitudes towards love, desire, and reputation. This provides a foundation for interpretation before moving into close analysis.

Students then complete independent annotation of the poem, focusing on how meaning is shaped through language. An optional extension encourages students to consider links with other poems in the anthology to begin forming comparative ideas.

The teacher can then guide students through AO2 analysis, exploring how Rochester’s language, tone, and imagery shape the poem’s presentation of desire and separation. Attention is also given to the form and structure of the poem and how these contribute to its overall meaning.

The lesson concludes with a comparative question linking the poem to The Great Gatsby, encouraging students to consider connections such as desire, relationships, and social expectations across texts.

This resource is suitable for Year 12 or Year 13 students studying AQA English Literature and supports independent annotation, contextual understanding, and comparative thinking.
