Lesson Structure
Starter (10 mins)
Play or read aloud MacPherson’s Rant.
Quick discussion: What did you notice about the sound of the words? Did anything feel like music?
Main Activities (40 mins)
Activity 1: Rhythm and Rhyme (10 mins)
Clap or tap the beat as the ballad is read again.
Highlight rhyming words together and discuss the pattern.
Activity 2: Scots Language Exploration (10 mins)
Word hunt: Find Scots words in the text and guess meanings.
Build a mini glossary on the board.
Practice saying the words aloud.
Activity : Creative Task
Activity : Create a “wanted poster” using at least 3 Scots words. include: bold heading: “Wanted!” or “Wanted: James MacPherson”, drawing or illustration of MacPherson (based on description or imagination)., name and Nickname, description inc physical features, traits, what he did, reward, last seen
Activity 4: Cultural Connection (5 mins)
Brief story of MacPherson and why he’s remembered.
Plenary
Reflect: What did you learn about Scots language and culture today?
Exit ticket: Write one Scots word and one thing about MacPherson.
Assessment
• Observation during rhythm and rhyme activity and responses during discussion
• Poster – 3 words? More? Are they used correctly?
• Exit tickets for quick check of understanding.
Extension
• Research another Scots ballad or folk song and bring one interesting word or phrase to class.
