This 50–60 minute Biology lesson introduces magnification calculations and actual size calculations in a clear, structured, and SEN-friendly way.

Created for students in an SEN Secondary School (Autism provision), with scaffolded maths support and engaging microscopy examples. Students calculate total magnification and actual size using real biological specimens.

Lesson Structure:

Starter – Scientific Drawing Retrieval: Students complete a scientific drawing task.

Retrieval – Review of Microscopes: Students recap total magnification.

Explicit Teaching – Actual Size Calculations: Students are introduced to the formula
Actual size = Image size ÷ Magnification. Worked examples are modelled step-by-step to reduce maths anxiety and support confidence.

Real-World Hook – Leonardo DiCaprio: Leonardo DiCaprio’s actual height is compared to his image size on the slide, helping make an abstract concept more concrete and memorable.

Guided Practice: Students practise actual size calculations using ants, houseflies
onion cells.

Independent Task – Biological Specimens: Students calculate the actual size of White blood cells, Human cheek cells, Euglena, Moss leaf cells, Daphnia, Heliozoa, Paramecium, Didinium.

This gives the maths genuine biological context and makes microscopy much more engaging.

Plenary – Final Challenge: Students calculate the actual size of a bacterium as a final check for understanding.

Includes:
Fully resourced PowerPoint - worksheets on slides 1 to 3
Worked examples and scaffolded calculations
Independent task slides included
Retrieval practice throughout
Real-world and biological examples
SEN-friendly structured maths support

Perfect for GCSE Biology microscopy, SEN classrooms, intervention, cover lessons, and lower-attaining learners needing scaffolded maths support.
