Worksheet given after a group activity of sharing counters. Students are given a different amount of counters each and the task is to share them between their group equally. They derive the formula themselves (conclusion at the top of the sheet 'add them all together and divide by how many people in the group') (a few may recognise its the same as finding the mean) Class discussions - what if there's a remainder, how can they be divided?
