Children generate numbers by estimating from different walls how many bricks they think there are. The teacher models each method first then children generate around 5 or 6 more estimates as a class to work out each average independently. Very fun introduction to four types of averages. For differentiation you could use mixed ability groups and children work together, or if they work on their own give them more adult support. Alternatively you could give lower children fewer estimates or smaller numbers.
