I always love to hear about other people’s best lessons and games. Mine? Kaboom. This is the game that students BEG me to play. We play rhythm Kaboom for every different concept, but it is my go to for rhythm centers, review games, back to school, end of the year, sub plans, and even when traveling on a cart to teachers’ classrooms.

This set of Kaboom! is focused on meter-- how many beats per measure. Cards include rhythms with 2, 3, 4, or 5 beats.

To play Kaboom:

Print out the cards and put them into a box or bucket.
Students take turn pulling out a card and saying how many beats are on the card.
If they get it right, they keep it. If it is wrong, they put it back in the box, and the next student takes a turn.
If they get a Kaboom, then they put all the cards back.
Most cards at the end wins.
This game never ends because eventually, they get Kaboom and put all their cards back in the bucket and start over.

I also like to listen and use it as an informal assessment.

Cards with 2, 3, 4, or 5 beats
90 rhythm cards total
15 quarter eighth (crotchet quaver)
15 quarter rest (crotchet rest)
15 half note (minims)
15 sixteenth notes (semiquavers)
1 whole note (semibreve)
14 dotted half notes (dotted minim)
15 dotted quarter notes (dotted crotchet)
Everything in stick notation
Print out the cards you need, use with multiple grade levels!
