I disagree with all the comments above - in year 6, as long as the children understand that multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 is the same as moving the digits then they can THINK of it as 'adding the zeros' or 'moving the decimal point'. It's a quick, easy and simple method that effectively gets the correct answer!! Even the maths experts mentally think of it in this way so why shouldn't the children!? We tend to complicate things more than we need to
Shouldn't say to add 0 - need to use the place value.<br /> Nice PowerPoint though
Looks good, but I too wouldn't teach multiplying by ten by telling children to add a zero. I would change that slide to say move all the digits one place to the left.
A visually attractive resource for teaching multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000. My only criticism would be that I would never tell the children to add a zero as this doesn't work when they move on to decimal numbers, so I might adapt that slide.
