Practise multiplying fractions using area models, so students see why you multiply the numerators and the denominators. 16 questions, full answers included.

Worksheet (1 page): eight questions. The first six each have a square area model: shade one fraction one way, shade the other fraction across, and count the overlap. On three of them the first fraction is already shaded and labelled, and by questions 5 and 6 students divide and shade an empty square themselves. Every answer is given in its simplest form. The last two questions put it in context: the area of a rectangle with fractional sides, and a fraction of a fraction of a class.

Further practice (1 page): eight questions graded by difficulty: multiplying and simplifying, a fraction times a whole number as a mixed number, a fraction of a fraction, finding a missing numerator, comparing how much chocolate two people eat, the area of a square tile, a farmer’s field split between two crops, and explaining whether 5/6 × 3/4 is bigger or smaller than 5/6 without working it out.

Answers to all 16 questions are included as a separate file.

Suitable for GCSE Foundation (AQA N8) and for Key Stage 3 classes working on multiplying fractions.
