Ideas for using the poem ‘My Heart’s in the Highlands’ by Robert Burns with KS2 pupils. Ideal for teachers studying classic poetry with their pupils; looking at poetry about landscapes; introducing primary pupils to the work of Robert Burns; and discussing the celebration known as Burns Night.The content is suitable for one or two lessons. * A useful PPT which contains: the poem; an accompanying glossary with supporting visual images; background information about the poem and the poet; ideas for independent work, discussion and follow-up activities.
* A copy of the poem. Useful for pupils to make annotations or highlight.
* Two differentiated worksheets. Worksheet A contains a straightforward literal task and an activity requiring pupils to visualise aspects of the poem. Worksheet B is more challenging and contains tasks linked to exploring the poet’s use of language and finding textual evidence.
