This complete write-on unit has been designed to support pupils in developing secure textual knowledge, confident analysis and strong exam technique across Anne Donovan’s National 5 Scottish Set Texts.

Covering All That Glisters, Hieroglyphics, Loast, and Me and the Babbie, the pack moves pupils through a carefully structured sequence of reading, discussion and exam practice. The materials are built to balance clear scaffolding with meaningful challenge, making the unit highly effective with mixed-ability National 5 classes.

Throughout the booklet, pupils are guided from initial comprehension and evidence gathering into deeper analysis of character, theme, symbolism and writer’s craft. Regular modelling and structured practice support learners in mastering the demands of the Critical Reading paper, particularly the 2-, 4- and 8-mark question types.

The resource has been developed through real classroom use and is designed to function as a print-and-go write-on workbook that reduces teacher preparation while maintaining academic rigour.

What’s included:

  • A full write-on pupil workbook covering all four Donovan set texts
  • Structured comprehension and evidence-gathering tasks for each story
  • Character, theme and symbolism analysis grids
  • Comparative tasks to build cross-text understanding
  • Clear modelling of the Quote–Analyse–Answer method
  • Guided practice for 2-mark language questions
  • Guided practice for 4-mark language questions
  • Step-by-step support for the 8-mark commonality question
  • Opportunities for discussion, reflection and extended writing
  • Editable format for easy classroom adaptation

This unit works particularly well for:

  • building secure knowledge of the Donovan stories
  • developing confidence with textual analysis
  • supporting pupils who struggle to structure answers
  • preparing mixed-ability classes for the Scottish Set Text exam
  • reducing teacher planning time with a coherent, ready-to-teach sequence

Written for Scottish secondary classrooms, this resource aligns closely with CfE and National 5 English assessment demands while remaining flexible enough to adapt to different departmental approaches.

Obsidian English resources are built from real classroom practice and focus on what teachers actually need: coherent units, strong scaffolding and materials that work with real pupils.
