An interesting and detailed power point on the control of heart rate in the human body, tailored for the new OCR A course.

As a starter, there is a diagram of the heart to label and recap what students learnt from AS on the SAN, AVN, bundle of his and purkinje fibres.

The presentation begins by explaining the function of the heart and why heart rate needs to be modified. It then recaps the myogenic functioning of cardiac muscle, and the role of the SAN and AVN as a pacemaker.

Following this, there is a clear explanation on how the cardiovascular centre in the medulla, works alongside the autonomic nervous system to increase or decrease the heart rate according to activity levels. This includes the range of receptors that allow the cardiovascular system to do this.

The presentation finishes with an interesting video clip and information on artificial pace-makers.

Finally, there is some practice exam questions to test students' understanding.

5.5.9 (k) To understand the effects of hormones and nervous
mechanisms on heart rate
