A table to allow students to break down the key steps in determining a structure using NMR data. This simple table scaffold allows the students to do the following:

  1. Identify the chemical shifts values for each peak
  2. Identify the splitting pattern for each peak
  3. Calculate integration ratios from relative intensities
  4. Suggest a structure for each of the fragments

All of this allows them to methodically and sequentially construct the structure of the compounds from each of the individual “jigsaw pieces” of information provided in an NMR spectrum. This table will minimize the cognitive overload that students experience when attempting to solve unstructured NMR structural determination problems.
