Stuart tethered his goat to a shed, using a 20 foot length of rope. Where was the goat tethered? What area could the goat graze? Could the goat have eaten more if the rope was attached to a different point?

This problem provides a great opportunity to introduce a very useful way of representing numbers algebraically. It also provides an opportunity to manipulate these expressions and relate the result to their numerical investigations.
