Place Value
Key Stage: 2 ★★

Each child in a class draws four number cards. They try to make certain types of numbers with their digits. Can you work out who wins each time?

This problem can be used when introducing or revising numbers in the thousands. Children's understanding of place value will be reinforced and discussion will give plenty of opportunities to emphasise appropriate vocabulary not only on place value but also on odd and even numbers. The game described can transform what could be a tedious task into an engaging activity.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

A link to the nrich website with an activity to use 4 digits and make numbers with given properties (lowest, highest, odd, even, closest to 5000, etc). The PDF's also give a set of digit cards and a game board to use for the activity if required. A useful resource to develop understanding of place value, number properties and problem solving skills in KS2.
