Area, 2D Shapes
Key Stage: 2 ★★★

Four squares can fit into a square with twice the side length. Can you do the same with some other shapes?

This problem helps learners to come to terms with the concept of area and also to explore the properties of many straight-sided shapes. It requires some quite difficult visualisation when more complex shapes are used. However, the beginning is very accessible so everyone can become involved quickly.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.
