Speed, Functions and Graphs
Key Stage: 2 and 3 ★★★

A bus carrying a group of students breaks down. The teacher drives half of them back to school, whilst the others start to walk. She then turns back to pick up the walkers. How far have these students walked when they are picked up?

This problem provides some practice of working with distances, speeds and times, and it is accessible to students trying different cases numerically. It could also be an excellent moment to introduce distance-time graphs.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.
