Excel required - for generating random target numbers
Suitable for KS2
Required = dice and counters

Aim: Players have a target number and use a combination of 5 single digit number cards (1-9), together with the four operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) to make that target number ( or as close to that number as they can.)
The player can use any combination of numbers and operations to produce the Target number.
The player with the closest number for each round, rolls the dice and moves the required number of spaces on the game board.
The first player to reach the finish is declared the winner.
Rules for the game and board set up are provided with the Instructions file.

Pupils develop Number, Calculation, Problem-Solving, Reasoning and Critical Thinking skills.
Key Maths vocabulary = Target number, Operations, Calculate, Equation, Multiple, Difference, Sum, Product, Quotient.

Provided = Game Boards, Single digit game numbers, Luck dip cards, Life Cards, Operation signs, Target numbers.

The target numbers are generated in Excel and a new set of random numbers are generated every time the file is opened.
If you use a Mac, pressing the fn key then the f9 key, will generate random numbers too. This is particularly useful when you want to see what numbers are generated before you decide to print.

I have suggested one set of game rules in the Instructions file, however you can create your own bespoke set of rules easily.
For example: 1.) I have suggested dealing five game cards to each player; you might decide on a different number.
2.) I have suggested that players use the same game cards for three rounds then be dealt another 5 cards. You may decide to deal a new set of cards after two rounds…

BONUS: See Image - A Brain Boggle worksheet to provide pupils practice with the four operations and Target aiming. A new set of random numbers is generated every time the file is opened. If you use a Mac, generate a new set of random numbers by pressing the fn followed by the f9 key.
Score 5 points for each accurate equation and keep a record of the scores.
These worksheets require stamina and patience.

Have fun!
