This is a lesson that would be ideal for years 7-9, analysing the notorious scene in Oliver Twist where he asks for more gruel. It gets students used to the ideas behind key GCSE texts like A Christmas Carol and Silas Marner, of the workhouse, being orphaned, the Poor Laws and even the Victorian attitudes towards illegitimacy and single motherhood. Cultural context is provided and key words are explained.
