In this lesson, students engage with the big question: How does Shelley use juxtaposition to present Ozymandias’ power? The lesson begins with a Frayer model activity to introduce and clarify the concept of juxtaposition, helping students build a solid understanding of the term before engaging with the poem. This is followed by a short animated video that provides context and a visual interpretation of Ozymandias. Students then analyse the poem using a guided worksheet with scaffolded questions, focusing on Shelley’s use of contrasting imagery and tone. A What-How-Why (WHW) scaffold supports students in developing a structured analytical response, culminating in a written interpretation of how Shelley presents the theme of power through juxtaposition.
