This lesson helps students to write more detailed, developed responses to Paper 1 Question 2 "How does the writer use language to…?" through low, mid and high level models, as well as teaching paragraph structures. It uses an extract from Charles’ Dickens Great Expectations which portrays the protagonist’s encounter with an escaped convict, answering the question “How does the writer use language to describe the man?”

  • Explicitly teaches the mark scheme, showing students what descriptors each band includes.
