It's cold, very cold when you step from the zodiac onto Paulet Islands. The fist impression is one of penguins - masses of Adelie penguins. The book states that there are about 100,00 pairs - but no one has actually counted them. Inquisitive birds they find human visitors interesting and they literally come and stand on your boots. This unit has a focus on the major wildlife groups on the Antarctic Island. It provides information about penguins; blue-eyed shags; visiting birds; sea resources and predators. Students can find out additional material about how these animals survive. As tourist numbers increase there is the potential for increasing impacts on both the native wildlife and the environment. This unit can also form the background to the final unit on Paulet Island - CONSERVATION ISSUES. This unit can stand alone but in a way it would be a pity not to link it with other titles on this island. Be prepared to warm to this cold environment.
