## Perimeter and Area investigation in real life context. End of unit D1 Year 6

I have tried to link perimeter and area to real life contexts. I used images from Goggle earth and the measurement tool - all the building measurements are accurate (they have been rounded). The investigation involves the children calculating using real measurements and real prices the costs of re turfing the Arsenal stadium , decking the court yard at Buckingham Palace and knocking down the Houses of Parliament to make a car park to solve the congestion probs in London. I showed the the images on Google Earth and they loved flying from one place to the other. I hope this is useful to someone

Two differentiated problem solving activities for children to apply their knowledge of area. I used this with a Year 4 class. Could easily be adapted for higher or lower ability learners. Accompanying powerpoint included.

#### Year 4 - Area and Perimeter Problem Solving - Dragon Design Context

Included are 4 days of planning + resources for a dragon-themed area and perimeter problem solving week. Each day the design briefs were printed off into mini-booklets for the children. The fourth day was a lesson observation including a message from the troublesome customer Smaug! This was a popular sequence of lessons! This was originally intended for a year 4 class but could easily be used with years 5 and 6 as it is open-ended.

#### British Values in real life context

Aimed at KS4, this look at British Values and the way they impact on everyday decisions and actions can easily be differentiated to suit KS3 or KS5.<br />
<br />
As British Values becoming an increasingly important part of the OFSTED framework, a session like this is really useful to keep up your sleeves!<br />
<br />
When I had 8 Year 10 tutor groups off timetable as a drop down day, 1 group said this session was the highlight of the day. Another said 'Good information given. Good videos shown. Good open discussion sections.'<br />

#### Cash for questions revision activity

There are 4 sets of questions (Number, Algebra, Shape, Data) which are mainly A and A* (with some lower grade questions from topics which students struggle with, e.g. percentages, constructions). PLEASE REVIEW / COMMENT. Students work in pairs or small groups to answer the questions. When they finish a question they get it marked and if it is correct they are given cash to the value of the question. There are bank notes which you can put your school name and pictures of your teachers on. The team with the most money at the end could be given a prize.
