The original game by ReSolve inspired me to make one with decimals and algebra.
Student receives a board to write on and 15 mixed cards with no more than 9 of any one card type to avoid regrouping (1s,10s, 100s OR 0.1s,0.01s, 0.001s OR 1s, xs, x^2s)
Taking one card out at a time, write its value in the box and the total in the space underneath (see photos). The sum of the digits of the final total (eg 6 + 1 + 8) must be 15 - that’s an easy way for you to check if the addition has been done correctly. Use the A3 boards on the final pages if you want students to go beyond 100 (then the total of 15 no longer works as there will have been regrouping)
Another option: Reverse and start with the total and subtract each time (if done correctly student should end up with 0) .
There is the option to write a starting value in the pentagon which is a good way to remind students that they have started at 0 (or a number you choose or the total of their cards if doing subtraction).
Each student will have their own different board. There is also an A3 double page version which will include students having to regroup. It really is a lovely game that can be played many times with the same pieces to show students that the order in which numbers are added doesn’t make difference to the total. You can also ask students to write their number out eg 6 hundreds, 1 ten and 8 ones or 6 x 100 + 1 x 10 + 8 x 1.
The algebra one is to show that x^2 can only be added to x^2 etc - the coefficients add to 15.
Options: Maybe even consider adding in some -x^2,-x,-1 cards so they have to do subtraction as well. At the end the student could choose values for x and work out the value of their expression or reverse (and need to factorise :) for a super challenge!
