Pond Life – KS2 Science SEN Adapted Lesson + At A Glance Printable

A highly accessible KS2 Science lesson on pond life, specially adapted for mixed Years 3–6 pupils with SEN. Pupils explore a pond as a habitat, sort living things into simple groups, use yes/no questions to identify creatures and build food chains to show what eats what.

The lesson introduces four carefully selected core concepts and vocabulary, including producer, consumer, backbone and no backbone, with pictures and simplified language to support understanding. Pupils sort familiar pond organisms including newts, herons, water boatmen, dragonflies, pondweed and duckweed.

Food chains are taught visually and practically, with particular attention to the direction of the arrows, while an independent pond enquiry develops working scientifically through questioning, observation, tallying and reporting findings.

The SEN-adapted PowerPoint is the main teaching resource, with reduced content per slide, a visual timetable, picture-supported vocabulary, sentence starters and opportunities for pupils to say, draw or write their answers.

Also included is the Pond Life At A Glance printable: an engaging A4 black-and-white colour-in sheet that brings the key learning together visually for retrieval, revision and independent learning.
