Pond Life – Lower KS2 Science | Year 4
Bring pond life into the Year 4 classroom with this colourful, pupil-friendly Science resource. Children move beyond simply naming pond creatures to grouping and classifying living things by observable features, using and creating simple classification keys, exploring adaptations, and explaining pond food chains using producer, consumer, predator and prey vocabulary.
The lesson develops Working Scientifically through asking questions, planning an enquiry, observing, gathering and recording evidence, and explaining findings. Short independent tasks provide regular checks for understanding, while pupils are encouraged to explain and justify their thinking, not simply give an answer.
The resource includes clear learning objectives, explicit vocabulary teaching, classification and food-chain activities, scientific enquiry, modelled explanations, assessment opportunities, Curriculum Fit guidance and an At A Glance black-and-white revision/colouring sheet. The lesson structure is also Rosenshine-compatible, with modelling followed by guided and independent practice and regular checks for understanding.
Ideal for Lower KS2 Science, Year 4, Living Things and Their Habitats, classification, classification keys, food chains and Working Scientifically.
NB. This lesson was designed and written by a teacher. The draft PowerPoint was made by Claude AI, the graphically enhanced version was then made by ChatGPT, and all editing was done by Copilot. Every stage was overseen, amended where necessary, and approved by a teacher. Total time approximately 12 hours.
