Position Paper and Rubric. Writing an argument! A writing assignment that defines a position paper and its purpose, possible topics, an outline, and a rubric based on research, format, and requirements. Students must choose a controversial topic and present their argument for their opinion about it. They must research their topic to establish credibility, and provide at least three citations in either MLA or APA format. (You can designate which one, or let them choose.) Aligned to Common Core Standards for ELA Writing.

Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
Introduce claim(s), acknowledge alternate or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically.
Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate, credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.
Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among claim(s), reasons, and evidence.
Establish and maintain a formal style.
Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented.
