Get students to practice language analysis on this list of opening lines from novels. Taken from a range of genres, these opening lines are language rich, and varied in structure and style. Students can either annotate language on the worksheets and write a brief summary explaining why the writer's language choices are effective, or copy out quotes onto paper/into exercise books and 'explode' them, labelling language techniques and making notes on effect.
