Using a "code" (the alphabet) the children complete numeracy problems to work out where on the map certain places are located. Each numerical answer corresponds to a location on the map, and children will be able to fill out the map once they have completed all of the problems. This particular map is aimed at Primary 5 (KS2) but can easily be modified to suit more able pupils.
This activity took 30/45mins to complete, and children worked as mixed pairs.
Children should understand basic operations, and will be introduced to square and prime numbers during this activity.
Resources include
- the blank map for children to complete
- cards with 18 problems and 2 instructional cards
- a riddle

My kids absolutely loved this activity. They were engaged from start to finish and because there were only 18 questions, it led to really easy extension work of creating puzzles to fill the empty 'shops'
