TO LAST 45 MIN – 1H | 39 SLIDES

In this thought-provoking and inclusive PSHE lesson, students will explore what discrimination means, how it can manifest in different forms, and what they can do to challenge it. Designed to promote empathy, equality, and critical thinking, this session equips students with the knowledge and confidence to recognise discrimination and take a stand against it in a respectful and informed way.

What the lesson includes:

  • An engaging starter quiz: “What counts as – to test assumptions and spark discussion

  • Clear definitions and real-life examples of direct and indirect discrimination, prejudice, and bias

  • Explanations of the Equality Act and the nine protected characteristics

  • Group and pair tasks exploring case studies

  • Scenario-based activity: “How could you respond?” – encouraging practical, respectful responses to discrimination

  • A list of organisations offering support and advice for those affected by discrimination

Pupils will be encouraged to:

  • Understand the impact discrimination can have on individuals and communities

  • Reflect on their own beliefs, language, and behaviours

  • Learn how to be an upstander, not a bystander

  • Foster a culture of respect, allyship, and inclusion in their school and wider world

This lesson provides a safe and respectful space for students to explore complex issues around identity, equality, and fairness—and to become informed, compassionate citizens.
