This colourful Quote-Splosion poster is designed to help students move beyond simply spotting a quotation and begin exploring the connotations, suggestions and deeper meanings hidden within it.
Using Romeo’s famous description of Juliet, “She doth teach the torches to burn bright”, the poster models how students can break a quotation into individual words and phrases before developing their ideas into a detailed analytical paragraph.
It also includes three accessible questions students can use when analysing any quotation:
What does the word or phrase make you think of?
What could this suggest?
What does this tell us about the character or theme?
A completed model paragraph at the bottom of the poster demonstrates how the individual annotations can then be combined into a developed piece of analysis.
This resource is particularly useful for KS3 English students, including students who find analytical writing challenging, while still encouraging more confident students to explore multiple interpretations and develop their ideas further.
Perfect for displaying in the classroom as a visual reminder during extended writing, quotation analysis, PEA/PETAL paragraphs and literature lessons.
The poster has been designed at A1 size, meaning it can be printed as a large classroom display or scaled down to A2, A3 or A4 depending on your needs.
