This lesson will help you guide your students to mastery of the skills required to answer GCSE 6-marker calculation questions. Based on the main calculation practice worksheet available here.

The lesson begins with identifying the quantities that appear in the physics topic and their relevant units, recapping the equations that link them building into a short practice identifying the correct equation to use in different situations. Students are then introduced to how calculations are made more difficult as 4, 5 and 6 mark questions - with an example six-marker.

The bulk of the lesson is Independent practice of multi-step calculations, where through 8 worded calculation questions, including 2 worked examples

Slides for a plenary is also included - Writing the steps that need to be followed to successfully answer a multi-step calculation and gain 6 marks.

This worksheet is an excellent tool for preparing students to tackle calculation questions typically found on AQA Physics Paper 1, and it’s equally valuable for other exam boards.

What’s included:

  1. Full powerpoint slide deck to support instruction (.ppt) and feedback of answers
  2. Editable and Ready-to-print (.pdf and .doc) versions of multi-step calculation worksheets and their solutions
  3. Ready-to-print starter handout for quantities and units (.doc)

    Designed to help you to:
  • Save time with a full lesson ready to use in class or for revision.
  • Model excellence with multiple “we do” worked examples which scaffold students into “you do” independent practice that encourages use of the FIFA (Formula, Insert, Fine-tune, Answer) method
  • Challenge your most able with level 3 calculations which stretch your grade 7–9 students beyond single-equation substitution
  • Feedback without fuss by either projecting solutions for whole-class green penning, or handing out answer sheets for self-assessment
