IB Maths AI SL 5.2 – Increasing and Decreasing Functions (Student + Teacher Notes)

These notes introduce how the first derivative describes a function’s behaviour. Students connect the sign of f′(x) with whether a function is increasing, decreasing or constant, and relate derivative values to the slope of a curve and its movement from left to right.

The notes provide clear explanations of the key definitions and derivative conditions, with visual reasoning prompts to help students explain why positive, negative and zero gradients correspond to different function behaviour. Use them for lesson support, revision or alongside the matching presentation and practice worksheet.
