A contemporary poetry unit exploring emotion, behaviour, and loss of control — showing how thoughts build, reactions form, and behaviour shifts under pressure.

Suitable for: Year 8 (KS3) · Ages 11–14

What this unit is about
This five-lesson sequence explores how behaviour develops in moments of tension — from internal build-up to outward reaction, and from control to withdrawal.

Each lesson presents a clear, relatable situation, allowing students to examine anger, fear, confrontation, and response through carefully structured reading and discussion. The focus remains literary and text-based, with students analysing how meaning is built through language, structure, and perspective.

Across the unit, students track how behaviour changes depending on environment, pressure, and interpretation. They move from experiencing behaviour as immediate and reactive, to observing it more closely through language and detail.

At the centre of the unit is a simple shift:
What happens before behaviour goes out of control?

Designed as a focused, minimal sequence, the unit prioritises depth over coverage — helping students analyse language precisely, recognise patterns in behaviour, and stay engaged within a clear structure.

• 5 full lesson plans (First Encounter → Deep Reading → Writing → Reflection)
