AQA A-Level Physics Transition| Explanation and Exam Technique | GCSE to A-Level Bridging Year 12 Induction Worksheet
Explanation questions are where students lose the most marks. This bridging resource aims to address that before the course even begins. Every mark scheme is modelled on analysis of real AQA AS and A-Level schemes and examiner reports so students learn what an A-Level explanation has to do.
Designed as summer transition work, or induction work, questions are carefully chosen to be accessible for students who only have GCSE knowledge, focusing entirely on their explanation skills. They will be encouraged to link reasoning, use precise terminology and name the laws or principles behind their answers.
Students are supplied with a reference sheet with tips and annotated explain answers, then work through four escalating activity types (Mark it, Fix it, Finish it, Explain it fully) moving from judging answers to producing them independently
What’s included:
- One page reference sheet with top tips for A-Level explanation writing, plus two annotated model answers showing what earns marks and what is missing
- 8 practice questions (27 marks) across two pages including 4 structured activity types.
- Full model answers
- AS-style mark scheme with examiner-style additional guidance
- Editable word and ready-to-print pdf versions (.doc and .pdf)
Designed to help you to: - Save time with a complete, self-contained task requiring zero preparation, ready to set as transition summer work, use in induction programs, or to deploy as an early Year 12 exam technique lesson
- Set expectations early by showing students how A-Level marking differs from GCSE using genuine AQA marking conventions
- Ensure progress with four structured activity types move students from considering what’s good about an answer, through improvement to writing them unscaffolded.
- Bridge GCSE to A-Level with questions using Combined Science content students already know, removing the barrier of unfamiliar physics and allowing students to focus entirely on developing their explanation technique.
- Identify weaknesses early through activities which illuminate the specific habits that cost students marks.
- Endourage independence and support self-study with model answers meaning students can self-assess and improve without teacher input, making this viable as unsupervised summer work.
