Year 7 inference reading pack for KS3 English: six original texts with inference questions and teacher answer keys, building to independent inference. Pupils read between the lines of short, self-contained stories and use evidence to explain what the writer has not said directly.

What’s included

  • 6 original reading texts, written for Year 7 / lower KS3
  • 45 inference questions (in total) , with a question set for each text
  • 6 teacher answer keys, each following its text and questions
  • Printable PDF worksheets with name, class and date boxes and answer lines

What pupils practise

• Spotting clues in actions, dialogue and small details
• Making inferences and supporting them with evidence
• Explaining how the evidence leads to the conclusion
• Inferring character feelings, attitudes, motivation and relationships
• Connecting several clues to reach a supported conclusion

How the pack progresses

The texts run in this order:

    1. The Unclaimed Parcel, 2. The Repair Shed, 3. The Last Train Home, 4.The Photograph in the Drawer, 5. The Changing Shoreline and 6. The Decision.
  • Early question sets include tick-box and multiple-choice items and prompt pupils on how much evidence to use. The final two texts ask open questions with no such prompts and ask pupils to link clues across the whole passage.
  • Within each text, questions move from spotting clues to a challenge question.

Answer keys
Each key gives a possible answer, the supporting evidence, an explanation and the alternative interpretations to accept. Several include teacher guidance on crediting challenge answers.

Ways to use
KS3 reading comprehension lessons, independent work, homework or cover work. Each text stands alone, so the pack can be worked through one text at a time.
