Biomimicry is one of the most exciting ways to inspire children about science, nature and conservation.
These free resources include classroom lesson plans and two illustrated slide presentations introducing pupils to biomimicry, the science of learning from nature. Children discover how plants and animals have inspired inventions such as Velcro, high-speed trains and even life-saving medicines.
The lessons also explore why biodiversity matters. Every species has evolved solutions to problems over millions of years. When species become extinct, we don’t just lose wildlife. We may also lose remarkable ideas and discoveries that could benefit future generations.
"My Year 4 class just can’t get enough of it. It’s really got them thinking. We’ve had brilliant discussions about extinction and they’re fascinated by inventions inspired by plants and animals. Wonderful songs too. We can’t stop singing them!" MG, Year 4 teacher, UK
These resources are based on Lost on Infinity, our award-winning musical adventure written with BBC writer Steve Punt. The story explores conservation, extinction, evolution and biodiversity through songs, storytelling and science.
More than 5,000 schools have used our free teaching resources.
