
I originally put this resource together for my own class. They are completely obsessed with football at the moment and massively caught up in World Cup excitement, so I wanted to tap into that energy for a cross-curricular project. It went down brilliantly with them, and it kept the engagement levels really high while still making them think critically.
How it works:
The premise is that the coaching staff have lost the final tactical plan before the Morocco match, and the students act as the analytics team to rebuild it. To crack the codes, they have to work through four distinct problem-solving tasks:

** Mission 1 (Reading Comprehension):** A VIPERS-style text focusing on the opening match against Haiti, testing vocabulary, inference, and retrieval.

Mission 2 (Fractions & Data): Students look through a “confidential” player statistics file to simplify fractions, evaluate shooting accuracy, and compare passing completion rates.

** Mission 3 (History & Literacy):** A reading task focusing on Boston historical ties to Scottish emigration and the American Revolution, leading into a themed crossword puzzle. (The answers decode an anagram of I Can Boogie).

** Mission 4 (Timetables & Logic):** A practical math challenge based on a train timetable grid. Pupils calculate time intervals and train capacities to work out the latest safe departure time before the stadium gates close.

The Final Report: A brief writing task where they must choose between a defensive or attacking strategy, using the math and reading data they’ve just calculated to justify their decision to the manager.
Classroom Use:
It is completely print-and-go with no prep required. I split my class into small “analyst teams” of three or four, which worked perfectly for generating good peer discussion and math talk. It is ideal for an afternoon, a rainy-day resource, or a project across a couple of morning slots.
A straightforward teacher answer key is included at the back of the file to make marking or student self-assessment quick and easy.
