This is a 100+ page novel study on the brilliant book “Scout and the Rescue Dogs” by Dianne Wolfer. This book is featured on the CBCA shortlist for Younger Readers in 2024.

Scout and the Rescue Dogs follows the heartwarming journey of eleven-year-old Scout, a compassionate and determined girl who dreams of making a difference in the world. When Scout discovers a local animal shelter in need of volunteers, she jumps at the chance to help. Little does she know, her decision will lead her on an unforgettable adventure filled with friendship, courage, and the true meaning of compassion. With each wagging tail and slobbery kiss, Scout discovers her own strength and discovers that sometimes, the best way to save others is by opening your heart.

This resource consists of a chapter-by-chapter comprehension guide. The questions cover a range of comprehension skills, from literal to inferential, plus author purpose, comparing and contrasting, summarising, predicting and much more. A comprehensive answer guide is also provided.

Each section also has a creative response, designed to be high-interest, independent and engaging. These are often linked to the Creative and Practical Arts.

This book would be suitable for a whole class read-aloud, or as a Reader’s Circle book for either Stage 2 or Stage 3.

There is a bank of ten Literacy Circle tasks, designed to be printed and laminated for future use. These involve a high degree of student choice, so as to be independent. All associated printables are also included.

There is also a writing assessment, based on the text. This is a persuasive writing task, linked to the theme of the text. A list of age-appropriate research sites is given for students to research the topic of puppy farming. There is a writing prompt, and a planning template to allow for structured learning and assessment.

I have many other literature-based resources in my store (most of them Australian) so feel free to check them out.

Happy reading!
