Seamus Heaney Poetry Worksheet Bundle: From Understanding to Analytical Writing

A colourful, highly scaffolded Leaving Certificate Higher Level poetry resource designed to help students move from understanding Seamus Heaney’s poems to writing confident analytical paragraphs.

The bundle contains three classroom-ready worksheets:

A Constable Calls: explores fear, authority, childhood and political tension while introducing students to Heaney’s imagery, symbolism, sound and repetition.
The Harvest Bow: focuses on memory, the father-son relationship, rural tradition, craftsmanship and unspoken love, with particular attention to symbolism and sensory imagery.
Mossbawn: Sunlight & A Call: a paired-poem study exploring family, home, memory, love and the passage of time. Students annotate the poems together before choosing one for their final written response.

Across the three resources, students are guided through a clear WHAT → HOW → PEE Chain approach. Activities include first-response questions, quotation work, theme exploration, technique detectives, vocabulary banks, effect and meaning prompts, comparison activities and structured PEE-chain planning.

The worksheets are particularly suitable for mixed-ability 5th Year classes, with enough support for students who find poetry analysis challenging while gradually introducing stronger analytical vocabulary and Leaving Certificate writing skills.

Key focus: understand the poem first, identify what Heaney is saying, explore how his poetic craft creates meaning, and finally turn those ideas into developed analytical paragraphs.

Ideal for class teaching, guided annotation, revision, homework or building towards a full Heaney poetry essay.
