WRITE FORWARD is a structured six-week handwriting and writing fluency intervention designed specifically for secondary-aged pupils.
The intervention provides three short sessions per week, with each session lasting approximately ten to fifteen minutes. It is designed to be practical and easy to deliver by a teacher or teaching assistant, either individually or with a small group.
The intervention focuses on developing key handwriting skills, including:
Letter formation
Letter size and consistency
Spacing between letters and words
Writing on the line
Pencil control
Letter joins
Writing fluency
Writing stamina
Applying handwriting skills to academic and everyday writing
The intervention uses explicit instruction, repeated practice and regular reflection, gradually moving from foundational handwriting skills towards independent and academic writing.

Who is it suitable for?
WRITE FORWARD is intended for secondary-aged pupils who would benefit from additional support with handwriting, writing fluency or written recording.
It may be particularly useful for pupils whose handwriting is difficult to read, inconsistent, slow, tiring or affecting their ability to record their ideas effectively in lessons.
The intervention can be used as:
A short-term targeted intervention
SEND or learning support provision
Literacy intervention
Additional handwriting practice
Individual pupil support
Small-group intervention
It does not require specialist equipment or lengthy sessions, making it suitable for use within a busy secondary school timetable.
Why WRITE FORWARD?
Secondary handwriting interventions can be difficult to fit into the school day. WRITE FORWARD has been designed around short, regular sessions that can be delivered consistently without requiring a separate lesson.
The intervention also understands that handwriting is not simply about making letters look neat. The wider aim is to help pupils develop handwriting that is usable in real classroom situations, including longer pieces of academic writing, timed tasks and examinations.
Eighteen sessions. Six weeks. Three short sessions per week. A clear starting point, structured practice and measurable end point
