An engaging series of lessons (3-4 lessons) to accompany the reading of Act 1 Scene 1, 2 & 3 of Macbeth. Using engaging videos (included) of three different adaptations, both on stage and in film of these scenes to ensure pupils are exposed to the wide range of interpretations whilst reading the script.

Reading focusses ensure a purposeful viewing/reading which are structured in line with GCSE assessment objectives and skills to ensure pupils are developing their GCSE Literature skills throughout and are able to reflect on each, AO1 -3, effectively. Following group and class discussion of each reading focus, model responses and a guided annotation of Macbeth's first soliloquy ('Two truths are told') are used to clarify and extend pupils understanding of Shakespeare's ideas, methods and contextual influences.

A closing discussion focusing on the 'borrowed robes' motif takes advantage of an opportunity to discuss the symbolism of clothing and uniform in the modern day whilst highlighting Shakespeare's use of recurring symbolism. Additionally, extension activities provide further reinforcement and enrichment by watching Act 1 scene 3 in full - stage adaptation, 2013 (video file included.)
