Shape starters that promote critical thinking, discussion and reasoning as a well as shape identification.

Similar to the ‘how many triangles are in the picture’ puzzles these are 2 pictures containing a range of overlapping shapes that lend themselves to the following questions:

  1. Which shapes can you see (there are the majority of common polygons in one, and a lot of different quadrilaterals in both) and then how do you define shapes like trapeziums, arrowheads etc.
  2. How many triangles/different shapes? (And then do all triangles count as the same shape or can we count the different types seperately - how do we know they’re isosceles etc…)
  3. Plenty of other things.
