Explore the life and historical impact of Spartacus with this reading comprehension resource for Year 5 and Year 6 (Upper Key Stage 2).

The information text introduces pupils to Spartacus, the gladiator who led one of the most famous rebellions against the Roman Republic. Pupils will learn about his origins in Thrace, his experiences as an enslaved gladiator and his training at a gladiatorial school in Capua. The text also explores his escape with a group of fellow gladiators in 73 BC and the beginning of the Third Servile War, also known as the Spartacus Revolt. Pupils will discover how Spartacus gathered an army of thousands of escaped enslaved people, defeated several Roman forces and challenged the power of the Roman Republic. The text also examines the campaign led by the Roman general Marcus Licinius Crassus, the defeat of Spartacus’s army in 71 BC and his lasting reputation as a symbol of resistance against slavery and oppression. The activities help pupils develop their reading comprehension skills, including retrieving information, making inferences and explaining their answers.
