2 worksheets for 'My Weekend News'. After playing Newsround from www.bbc.co.uk/newsround (repeat the clip a couple of times) talk, ask and answer questions, then use differentiated worksheets to demonstrate listening and writing skills.
To differentiate... lower levels- point, cut out and stick words.
middle abilities can use the word prompt to create their own sentences, copy from a whiteboard, or they can overwrite.
higher abilities can use the word prompt sheet to create and write their own sentences. This group should be encouraged to extend their sentences and use descriptive words.
'My Weekend News' is best used Monday morning while students still remember what they did at the weekend. (On Friday we send out emails or letters to parents to remind them to write a couple of things that they did with their child over the weekend that we can use as a prompt if the student forgets, or struggles to remember names of places. Some parents email photos of activities which are a great talking point and we put on the SMARTboard as a show and tell for the other students to ask and answer questions).
Newsround is a good activity any day of the week, especially fun on a Friday afternoon. Watch the clip a couple of times as a class then in groups talk about what students saw/heard. Feedback to other groups, to see if they had the same or different, and who recalled the most information. Use the worksheets to produce written evidence- cut out and stick on the appropriate photo, then write about them underneath. Lower abilities can point at what they liked best, being encouraged to come up with a sentence for each picture.
Middle abilities select, cut and stick appropriate pictures, then write a sentence for each, copying from a whiteboard or independently.
Higher abilities select, cut and stick appropriate pictures then independently, using full sentences write about they saw/heard, giving as much information as they can recall.
Extension work- students can type up their written answers on the computer, finding their own photos that link to the story.
